Pokémon Combat Power - Combat Power in Pokémon GO

Combat Power of Pokémon in Pokémon GO - Combat Power
CP in Pokemon GO

Combat Power or CP is a numerical measure of the strength of each individual Pokemon in the Pokemon GO game. A higher BS value means that the Pokemon has higher Attack, Defense, and Stamina combined. Combat power is calculated using a Pokemon's level, base stats, and individual characteristics IV.

The fighting strength of Pokemon in Pokemon GO

When you catch a Pokémon, its BS is either displayed directly or hidden behind three question marks ???, if it is higher than that of any of the already captured Pokémon in the trainer's collection:

What is the BS of Pokemon
What is the BS of Pokemon

The BS and the difficulty of capturing a Pokémon are usually correlated, although this also depends on the species in question.

The higher the level of the trainer, the higher the Pokémon BS can be, which can be downloaded with sweets and stardust. In addition, as the trainer level up, Wild Pokémon will encounter more combat strength than before.

In the Pokémon card, the BS is displayed at the very top above the image of the Pokémon itself. Slightly below this value is the arc of the potential of its BS. For example, a point on the arc will be completely to the left if the Pokémon has the lowest BS level, and vice versa, a point on the arc will be completely to the right if the Pokémon has the maximum BS for the current trainer level:

How to calculate combat strength

The BS of each individual Pokémon is calculated according to a special formula, and depends on the following characteristics:

  • Attack - basic attack and IV attack;
  • Defense - basic defense and defense IV;
  • Stamina - base durability and hit points IV;
  • Level - Pokemon level.

Not all of these parameters have the same effect in the formula, therefore, even Pokémon with low BS values can be very useful.

Combat power is calculated using the following mathematical formula:

BS = ((Basic Attack + Attack IV) * ((Basic Defense + Defense IV) ^ 0,5) * ((Basic Fort + Fort IV) ^ 0,5) * ((Level Scalar) ^ 2)) / 10

The Level Scalar is a number that Niantic uses to scale a Pokémon's attributes based on its level. There is only one such number for each Pokemon level. A table of these values is located below.

Let's look at a simple example to see how this formula works. The volunteer will be a Dratini at level 31 with low IV stats - 13 attack, 3 defense and 0 HP, which is shown in the images in this article:

IV Pokemon Dratini
IV Pokemon Dratini

Basic parameters of Dratini following:

  • Attack - 119;
  • Defense - 91;
  • Endurance - 121;
  • Level 31 scalar - 0,73776948.

BS Dratini = ((119 + 13) * ((91 + 3) ^ 0,5) * ((121 + 0) ^ 0,5) * (0,73776948 ^ 2)) / 10 = 766,25

767 BS is the average result for level 31 Dratini.

It's easy to calculate the maximum fighting power of a given Pokemon - you just need to change the scalar value to 0.842803710. In this case, the result will be 1000 BS.

Level scalar - table of values

The level scalar depends on the level of the Pokémon and has the following values for each level:
